Laboratory for Material Testing

The Laboratory of Structural Health Monitoring and Earthquake Engineering

The Laboratory carries out experimental research in the area of mechanical and physical characterization of construction materials including micro- and nano-composite construction materials with self-diagnostic properties for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) applications (e.g., cement- and clay-based construction materials), micro- and nano-composite road paving materials with load-sensing capabilities for dynamic weighing of vehicles, and construction materials doped with additives/aggregates that enhance their mechanical or physical performance or improve their sustainability (e.g., concrete admixed with phase change materials, concrete admixed with aggregates from recycling, and more). Theoretical research is also carried out to develop multiphysics analytical models that interpret the experimental response of traditional/innovative construction materials. These models can be used to conduct fine-tuned numerical simulations and innovative SHM applications.

The Laboratory for material testing also performs commercial and consulting work for third parties. Below is a list of the most requested services:

Tests on concretes and mortars

  • Compression test on standard cubes or cylinders (specimen rectification included)
  • Determination of material density
  • Determination of the normal elastic modulus and the stress-strain constitutive law
  • Indirect tensile test (Brazilian test)
  • Three-point and four-point bending tests

Tests on steel bars for reinforced concrete

  • Tensile test
  • Bending test

Tests on hollow bricks and bricks

  • Determination of the tensile strength under bending
  • Dimensional control with % drilling
